Based in Humboldt County, on the gorgeous north coast of California, Royal Gold has had the advantage of extensive research and development, and field testing in a community that demands unparalleled results and service.
How Our Potting Soil is Exceptional
As a more sustainable alternative to many traditional and popular growing mediums, Coconut Fiber is becoming widely recognized as the future of indoor and hydroponic gardening mediums and an important part of large scale agricultural soil building and reconditioning programs. With all our production, processing, and packaging taking place in one facility, here in the USA, we have unprecedented control and oversight of the quality and integrity of our input ingredients and final product. This allows us to create mediums consistent enough that people can build entire feeding and cultivation programs around, and diverse enough to fit into most any established program, while providing equal or superior results. Royal Gold chooses the highest quality input ingredients available and seeks out sustainable alternatives to traditional products. Diverting forest products from a wood fired power plant, and sourcing ingredients that are waste products from existing industry, without compromising our quality standards, are just a few of many ways we look to minimize our environmental footprint. As the Home gardening industry and industrial hydroponic and organic cultivation industries continue to grow and diversify, Royal Gold continues to innovate and create new products and ways to help gardeners succeed.
Potting Soil; Coco vs. Traditional Bagged Soils/Mediums
There are several reasons why we feel gardening in Coco is much better than gardening in peat moss based soils; First, and foremost, concern for the environment. There is rabid debate about the sustainability of peat mining, because it takes hundreds of years to form and accumulates at only about 1mm per year. Peat bogs also contain huge amounts of carbon- up to twice as much as the forests do worldwide. Once the peat bogs are dried out, the carbon is released into the atmosphere presumably contributing to climate change. Another issue with using peat moss as a growing medium is hydrophobia. Peat literally repels water after it has been dried, making it very difficult to properly rewet. So peat based soils tend to shrink up inside the pot, pulling the soil away from the sides and potentially damaging delicate roots. (Not ideal!) Perhaps the most well known issue gardeners have with peat moss mediums, is the pH.
Coconut Coir Fiber is the natural byproduct of the existing food and fiber industry of a renewable resource. Besides, coconuts fall to the ground every day! Coco coir also lasts longer and can be used up to five times in container gardens, saving you time and money. When you are finished with the coir, simply mix into your compost pile, outdoor garden or yard. When coco becomes dry, it doesn’t shrink inside the pot and is easily rewet.
Royal Gold Mendo Mix is the king of all Coco soils. A heavily amended, planting style mix, best suited for fast growing annuals. Mendo Mix is ideal for outdoor gardening in hot climates, and grow bed style gardens, yet works wonders traditional container style gardens indoors, or in greenhouses. Featuring strong water holding capacity, properly balanced with air holding capacity, and a complex blend of high grade dry amendments, Mendo Mix allows gardeners to begin feeding after about four weeks of growth. This gives gardeners the ability to adjust their nutrient profile and feeding regimen, according to their crops specific needs, at the proper time. See for yourself why Mendo Mix rules in the emerald triangle!
